Apostle Islands, WI

Sand Island, one of the western-most islands in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, was one of only two islands in the archipelago that supported year-round communities. The lives of the island residents were historically centered on lumbering, fishing, and agriculture. This population of permanent residents formed an identifiable and viable island community and culture Seasonal property owners on the island engaged a consulting team of historic architects, historic landscape architects, historians and archaeologists to research and document the current historic conditions of the island estates.
